Digico S21 First Use

LifeMission Church discovered that a lightning strike had damaged their existing mixing console (which was installed by MSM Systems in 2008). While they had an existing analog mixer to get them through the following weekend, MSM had less than 10 days to get a new console in place! And Digico was quick to respond!

The Digico S21 was the console of choice due to sound quality and Digico's history of continuing to add value with future new features for their customers.

The D2 Madi stage rack with added for 48 inputs and 16 outs connected via redundant digital cables. A S21 Aviom card was added for the musician's existing IEM monitors.

This location services as the hub for their other satelite video venues, so reliability and quality is a major consideration.

Here is the console in action for the first time and Tech Director.

Soundcraft impact Review

Soundcraft impact Initial Impressions

Pros
Fader glow which is a nice visual indication of what faders you are mixing, esp. Helpful since all 4 fader layers are customizable if desired.

Improved responsive 5" touch screen vs expression.

26 faders, 24 customizeable, 1 ST, 1 Mono. On the 24 faders any in/out, send, matrix, return. Or have your 8 DCAs on far right master section on all layers, or mix and match as you need. Scribble strips also have names, and a few LEDs for input and compression levels.

If you have been using other digital consoles, most use a touchscreen to display channel settings. With the impact you pretty much need to unlearn using the screen for information. It is very analog like with knob/LEDs for all functions and levels so you have to look at the console controls vs the screen. Other than patching, fader layers, and in use, adjusting effects parameters which are aided by the screen.

Nice sounding Lexicon reverbs and delays. Dedicated Tap buttons.

32x32 USB interface with free software from Ableton (I didn't try this out)

Lots of busses, 31 total. 20 subgroup/mixes, 4 stereo/mono matrices, Stereo, Mono

Dedicated 8 mute group buttons

Can patch inputs to any fader, or double patch if that is your thing.

Affordable Ministage Box 16 in x 8 Out via Madi built in interface

Scene recall via a GO button seemed useable for theatrical

Cons

  1. Not expandable over 40 mix total channels, 32 mono, 4 stereo channels/returns
  2. No USB thumb drive 2 track recording for quick uploads to web
  3. No multiband compressor
  4. No UDK buttons for customized functions
  5. No stereo inputs, must use the 24-32 combo XLR/1/4" inputs

A good mixer with full surface channel control and easy user interface. Much improved visual indications with flexible layer configurations. I recommend giving this mixer consideration in the $2500ish price point.

Yamaha TF mixer review <90 secs

Fantastic new iPad-like touch screen (Touch Flow) user interface and a few quirks, but overall an excellent release. Some of the shortcomings, I hope, will be fixed in software revs, and stagebox release. This is a short, phone video showing key items, so for more details or to get your hands on one email me.
